Infinity Ward sometimes gets a bad rep for making buggy or inconsistent games, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is no exception. That said, bullet penetration mechanics is something it has done well in the past, so fans were shocked to see how the study turned out.

Bullet penetration refers to a particular gun’s ability to pierce through obstacles and still deal damage to players on the other end. Most Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players are no doubt aware they can shoot through cardboard and wooden doors, but certain weapons can even shoot through concrete or thin metals.
In previous games, the higher the caliber of a weapon, the better penetration it would have for the most part, but it seems that not only is this not entirely true, but surfaces themselves have seemingly random durability levels. Though BlackOctoberFox does confirm that every weapon they tested was able to shoot through cardboard, wooden doors, and car doors, but things start to get weird after that. They point out the corrugated metal walls in the office of Shoothouse, and as it happens, none of the weapons tested, not even the HDR with the FMJ attachment, was able to pierce them despite how thin they are.
BlackOctoberFox also found a number of surfaces which could be penetrated at random even though they are far thicker than any bullet could handle. The square blocks dividing Container and Junk Yard, the cardboard house in Shanty Town, and the solid blue brick walls dividing junkyard and shantytown all typically cannot be fired through, but in full auto a few bullets would randomly pierce these thick surfaces. Players have recently been questioning whether FMJ makes a difference, and this seems to confirm that it does in some capacity. There were certain surfaces which couldn’t be shot through without the attachment, but admittedly it seems minor especially given the random nature of other surfaces.
Other strange things were found too such as a brick wall in which only the top layer of bricks is impenetrable, or two specific crates which can be fired through despite all other identical crates being completely impervious to bullets. This likely won’t affect players’ games too much, but could be good information to have.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
