In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, fairness is a priority of the developers. While the skill-based matchmaking argument has been around for a while, the controller versus mouse and keyboard debate is much older.

A Call of Duty fan on Reddit was not scared to share their opinion on the controller versus mouse and keyboard debate. Their solution is to provide a controller-only option and to separate players based on their input devices. Although crossplay is a great thing, they have some changes that they would want to implement. The Redditor validates that controllers do have aim assist to aid them, but points out that one thumb can not meet the maneuverability of an entire hand.
Mix that with a larger field of view and higher frame rates, and it is clear the players on PC using mouse and keyboard have an advantage over Modern Warfare’s controller fans. They describe mouse and keyboard and controllers like comparing a plastic stomp rocket to the power-propelled ones used in science classes.
So far, Activision has been taking an all or nothing approach to crossplay within Modern Warfare. There is a theory circulating that with enough time in the same environment, controller fans will adapt to the speed needed to compete against mouse and keyboard users. Although this could be true, the higher frame rates and different fields of view give the impression of playing two separate games.
No immediate change is expected from the developers, but their decisions in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will set precedent for other games in the franchise. As fans continue to wait for Season 4’s release date, the battle of controllers versus mouse and keyboard gets more heated.
The obvious solution, as opposed to reverting back before cross-play, is to add in skill-based matchmaking so fans are playing against enemies of equal skill. In the past fans have been resistant to the idea of skill-based matchmaking, but it seems like one of the more probable futures to solve the divide between input devices.
