In an exchange on Twitter between user Spartacus and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare narrative director Taylor Kurosaki, Spartacus expressed concern over the idea that the content being added to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s multiplayer might be somewhat spoiler-y or revealing of the sequel’s plot. In response, Kurosaki assured Spartacus that there is still excess room left for surprise in the sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

The “characters and story” that Spartacus is referring to is somewhat vague. There is a playable rendition of Ghost in the game’s multiplayer, who wears a mask bearing the face of a skull. Furthermore, it appears that Season 3 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Battle Pass will be bringing back game protagonist “Alex.” The trailer appears to show that “Alex” now has a prosthetic leg following the events of the game’s campaign which saw Alex officially sacrifice his own life to bring down the enemy.
Given Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s ending, it seemed fairly clear that Alex would be making a return, though it is fairly assured given his presence in Season 3 of the game’s DLC. However, there is apparently far more to be shown according to Kurosaki.
The events that occurred in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare do point in a particular direction for the plotline of the sequels. The mentioning of the Zakhaev family and Al-Asad both indicate that the sequel may be heading in the direction of 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. However, as Kurosaki points out, the sequels can head in any number of directions.
While Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare’s multiplayer is still highly trafficked, a remaster of 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was released recently. While not the highlight of the original, the game’s campaign was the central focus of the remaster and may serve as a refresher for fans of the sub-series.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
