There are certain catches, though. Unfortunately not all players will be able to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered just yet. Activision has only activated the servers for consoles, first. PC players have not reported that the servers have gone live just yet, which isn’t too surprising given how seriously publishers treat digital unlocks on the platform. For now, access to the game is exclusive to a subset of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One gamers alone.
Second, the servers are only available to specific pre-orderers. It only makes sense that in order to access the game, one would have to already own it. That means that only owners of certain non-standers copies of the game have access. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition pre-orderers on PlayStation 4 are able to digitally download the game, granting access. Xbox One owners of the same copy of the game were not able to pre-load the game, unfortunately, but if they somehow managed to acquire a retail copy then it should work. Nobody else should have access yet.
After several hours of being available, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered servers did go back down again. A message from the “Dev Team” popping up after servers went down implied that the studio was aware people have been playing and that they knowingly shut them down. However, it was also implied that the servers would be going back up “intermittently” prior to the game’s official launch.
Here’s the full statement shown in-game once the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered servers were pulled down:
Reception to Modern Warfare Remastered multiplayer’s early launch has been about as controversial as expected. Those able to play are excited to experience the game once again, but are intermingled with players unfamiliar with gameplay that’s been iterated on several times in the years since. As such, there are odd complaints about balance that old Call of Duty players are familiar with or even nostalgic for. It’s likely apt to say that the official launch of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will be a tumultuous, but exciting, experience.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which is bundled with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, officially launches on November 4. Servers and digital purchases may unlock earlier depending on time zones, as all unlocks will occur at midnight on November 4 ET (9:00PM PT).
