Indeed, Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the best selling game in the United States over the course of February 2020. This is certainly not the first time that this extremely-popular first-person shooter has appeared at the top of the NPD Group’s monthly report, and it has wrestled the number one slot back from Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, the current best selling title of 2020 and the fourth top seller of February.

Rounding out the top five for February 2020 are NBA 2K20, Grand Theft Auto 5, and The Division 2, which saw a big boost thanks to promotions surrounding the release of its Warlords of New York expansion. To note, these rankings are based on dollar sales, as opposed to unit sales, and they consider both physical and digital sales in the United States. A more comprehensive list of the best selling games of February 2020 is as follows:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 NBA 2K20 Grand Theft Auto 5 Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 Mario Kart 8 Ring Fit Adventure Madden NFL 20 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Minecraft Luigi’s Mansion 3 Red Dead Redemption 2 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Pokemon Sword Just Dance 2020 FIFA 20 Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege Need for Speed: Heat New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Interestingly, not a single game released in February 2020 made the month’s top 20, and Yakuza Remastered Collection was the best selling new release at 33. This is not extremely surprising, considering that February was quite light on major new releases, and this dearth of new games undoubtedly contributed to the 31% decrease in video game software spending that is seen when comparing February 2020 to the same month last year.
Video game software sales were not all that was down in February, though, as hardware and accessories sales were also well below where they were in February 2019. Overall, the NPD Group’s report suggests that video game-related sales were down 29% when comparing these two periods – a phenomenon that is very likely to be partly linked to the forthcoming releases of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
