A brief mission broken into two parts, players must first recover the Decimator Shield, a new wonder weapon that’s been introduced alongside the classic Call of Duty Zombies Ray Gun This can be achieved by completing a series of portal objectives and locating several crystals and runestones throughout the hub map. This culminates in a brief boss fight against Zabella the Deceiver, an ally of Kortifex, which takes place in the Dark Aether.

After she is defeated, players must interact with two more runestones and return to the Dark Aether. There, the Decimator Shield’s special ability can be used to destroy four anchors tethering a page from the Tome of Rituals. Once this is done, the page can be collected, and all players will be returned to the Terra Maledicta hub map, the first Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies Easter egg quest complete.

The most common grievance voiced seems to be that the meager content offering doesn’t justify the several-month-long wait for this new content drop, while others voiced that the new Easter egg quest is far too dialogue-heavy and focused on Call of Duty: Vanguard’s new Dark Aether entities. Additionally, many Zombies fans still aren’t sold on the new objective-based structure of the mode, and, while an alternative experience that’s closer in terms of gameplay to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Outbreak has been suggested, the developer seems invested in staying the course despite the communal outcry.

Members of the Call of Duty Zombies subreddit seem particularly disheartened by this new content drop, as many hoped it would redeem the mode from its rocky start. Thus far, reigning sentiment suggests that the new Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies hub map and the rest of the Season 2 content won’t revive a struggling experience and that many hardcore fans are planning on returning to previous entries in the series to get their fill of Call of Duty’s iconic horde mode. It’s worth noting that there may still be a few extra additions that are yet to be discovered, though fans will likely have to wait until Season 3 or beyond to uncover any more meaningful hidden content.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
