This comes from Jason Schreier, formerly of Kotaku, who is one of the most reliable sources when it comes to insider video game industry knowledge. While interacting with people on Twitter, Schreier stated that he’s heard the title Call of Duty: Vietnam “thrown around a couple of times,” and that as far as he knows, the game will still technically be part of the Black Ops series. However, Schreier made it a point to clarify that he is not completely sure about this and that since he is “not a COD person,” he doesn’t know “what it really means to be a Black Ops game.”

Schreier added that he doesn’t think Call of Duty: Vietnam is a reboot, as was previously reported. In any case, his Twitter statements line up with recent rumors about the game, which claim that Call of Duty: Vietnam will be set during the Cold War and will still be set in the Black Ops universe even if it doesn’t have the Black Ops subtitle.

Assuming Call of Duty: Vietnam is truly the 2020 Call of Duty game, one has to imagine that it will take a “boots on the ground” approach that’s been missing from Treyarch’s CoD games since Black Ops 2. Both Black Ops 3 and Black Ops 4 use science-fiction technology and feature advanced movement features, but a Call of Duty game set in Vietnam would presumably take a much more realistic approach.

While the Call of Duty: Vietnam campaign would likely be more realistic, that doesn’t mean that the game would abandon some of the more fantastical elements that the Treyarch Call of Duty games are known for. For example, it’s highly likely that Call of Duty: Vietnam has Zombies of some kind, so fans of that game mode should have that to look forward to later this year.

Of course, this is assuming that the reports on Call of Duty: Vietnam are accurate and that the game is still due out in 2020. There’s been some concern that Call of Duty 2020 could be delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but fans will just have to take a wait and see approach on that front.

Call of Duty: Vietnam is rumored to be in development.
