While it is common for Call of Duty: Warzone fans to create copies of things and places in Verdansk, this creation is a tad different. A professional Environment Artist has created a fan remake of the Gulag map in a different engine, and the effect is stunning.

Environment Artist Ashay Thube has brought the Call of Duty: Warzone’s Gulag to life in the popular Unreal Engine 4. While Call of Duty: Warzone uses the IW 8.0 Engine, this remake gives a defining visual difference between the two. To make the creation even more impressive, the Gulag map has been recreated by a single fan as opposed to an entire game studio. The detail in the tiles, reflection in the water, and accuracy to the original environment is stunning and gives the map a special focus.
The artist has made it clear that they do intend to create the upper floor as well as the inner segment, but to do that, they may use a different engine. If Thube brings the Call of Duty: Warzone Gulag to Unreal Engine 5, the results may be even more spectacular and detailed than before.
Fans have previously discussed graphical downgrades in Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare, with players claiming that the game is not as sharp as it was at launch. Placing the real Call of Duty: Warzone against this recreation may remind players of this, as the minor details are sharper than the actual map provides. Although this is created in a different engine, it does remind players of the game at launch and the quality that many fans feel they have lost.
While this is obviously created for portfolio purposes, this map is quickly spreading across the community. Call of Duty: Warzone fans love the detail and love that this artist has put into the map’s authenticity while still painting a realistic detail. Although this is not a playable version of the Gulag, it does go to show the graphical potential that Call of Duty: Warzone would have if it was created in Unreal Engine 4.
Call of Duty: Warzone is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
